07:43 pm - Day 4--Wednesday
Wednesday--1503 today/5986 total

Monday night was our sixth grade band concert, and Tuesday night was my social night this week. I'm hoping to have a few more solid nights this week to finish up the first part of the novel.

01:09 pm - Day 3--Thursday/Sunday
Thursday- 571 today/2820 total
Sunday, part 1- 1110 today/3930 total
Sunday, part 2- 558 today/4483 total

I'll be coming back to this later today, but right now, the weather outside is just too inviting. It's been a wonderful weekend for walks outside. I think today I'll head in another new direction, and see what there is to see in Highland.

Edit-Well, I walked for three miles north out of Highland. I hadn't been out that way, and I figured since it's such a nice day, I might as well take advantage. I got out there, made it till I couldn't see Highland anymore before deciding it was lunch time and trekked back. Factor in the twenty minutes of walking through downtown Highland and I think I was out there for a good two and a half hours today. Then, of course, I wanted to take a nap, but I stood strong against temptation.
I've got to run to Wal-Mart and buy a white button up shirt. I have a band concert tomorrow night, and wouldn't you know, but my brothers and father took all my white shirts. Luckily, I wear tuxes at all my other events, but this concert is just 6th grade, so I have to dress down a level or two.
It's amazing how much better you can feel about a day when you get some writing done.

01:49 pm - Solo and Ensemble went well
My kids did a fantastic job yesterday at S and E. Overall, all but two entries got a first place ranking, and the others were second place rankings, so it was a great day. The kids were happy, nervous, and excited, which is the best combination in a young performer. I got to have a nice chat with many parents, and I know the kids enjoyed the day.
I'm heading home tonight to visit with the family and get my oil changed, but I'll be back in Highland on Monday. There's a lot to do for the upcoming week.

08:27 pm - Hoo boy!
Thanks to Clay, I just increased my music library by 4000 songs. Woot! Now I have to go through and create new playlists to make that manageable. Unwoot!
IMEA was fantastic. I got to spend time with lots of friends I hadn't seen in ages, and I made a few new ones in the process. I'm heading up to Bloomington this weekend to hang out with one of them, after I spend Friday night and Saturday afternoon in Champaign to visit Joseph. I have to redeem myself for my horrible performance at New Year's, and Friday night will be the perfect opportunity.
I'm pretty excited about this weekend, for multiple reasons :) But right now I have to get over this damned post-IMEA cold. It struck in the night, and left nary a footprint. There is, however, lots of evidence in the form of used kleenex and dirty orange juice glasses. I suspect this case will be closed in a few days. It better, I don't want to be sniffling the whole damn weekend.

06:41 pm - It's been an interesting holiday season
I got a phone call the day of my high school concert, telling me that my mother had fallen on the ice and broken her ankle and leg. The result is two to three months of rest in bed, and another three of physical therapy. So, I went home as soon as school ended Friday to see how she was doing. Luckily, my grandmother is going to be staying with the family for the next few months to take care of her, so that's good news. My grandmother is a workhorse, and as an army wife of thirty plus years she expects total discipline. That didn't go over so well with the younger of the McElwee brood, and I heard lots of clashing over the past few days.
I spent Christmas Eve with my dad and his family, up until about 3pm, when I remembered that Mom hadn't gone Christmas shopping yet. I rushed home, asked her for lists, and five minutes later was on the road to Champaign. It was 4pm when I got out of Charleston, and 5pm when I got to Champaign. Most of the stores would be closing in an hour, so I had very little time to find gifts. Luckily, Target, Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, and Kohl's are all located very close to one another, and I was able to get to all four stores in an hour. They were locking the doors at Kohl's when I pushed through and grabbed some gift cards.
I raced home, wrapped all the presents, made Christmas morning donuts, and still had time to read a little before heading to bed. We had presents on Christmas, so it was all worth it, but it was a stressful few days before. Having Dad out of the house is a very strange affair, and I know it was looming on every mind in the room. This Christmas is especially atrocious for Mom, who lost her husband and her mobility. That's why we were all trying very hard to take care of her whenever she needed something, and to keep her cheerful.
I'm back in the apartment for a few days before I head back home for New Year's. My mom's side is coming to our house, which is a first, but everyone wants to get together, and my mom can't leave the house. She's practically trapped on the couch, so we're going out of the way to make things as easy as possible for her. Family is such a good thing to have during this time of year, especially when one of your legs doesn't work.
Hope everyone had a great Christmas, and have a happy New Year's night.

11:14 pm - I didn't know
What I was getting into this year. Watching my students perform their Christmas musical tonight, pushing to remember their four or five lines, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I didn't think I could feel this way about anything again, but I love those kids. I am so proud of everything they've done. I don't care if you're talking about the third grade or sixth. Seeing their smiles afterward, it was worth all the hours and all the worry.
I think I like my life here.

I'm up to book 17 since I moved down here. Also, four months without computer games. I'm trying.
